A brief overview of the BounceBack Express backup software included with the Verbatim 500GB FireWire/USB External Hard Drive

Last Thursday I bought two DVDs of software. I installed Photoshop all right, but when I tried to install Dreamweaver, it didn’t work (it told me that my system didn’t have enough RAM,but I don’t think this is related). I tried it again, and I got a blue screen saying that Windows had to shut down and "Beginning dump of physical memory". I restarted the computer, and when I got to Windows, my ASUS NB Probe, which monitors system status, said that the status was "Fatal". In the Hard Drive section it said "S.M.A.R.T: Start/Stop count Throughput performance". Now every time I start my computer I get a message saing something like "Hard Disk status BAD, Backup and Replace". To start the computer now, I have to press F2 to get into the setup, and then press Esc to discard changes and exit. I backed up all my data and used my computer’s recovery disc to reformat the hard drive, but while the recovery process was going on, the same error message still came up.
Help, please !!!
Yup. I agree. Its sad, but when a hard disc starts giving trouble it always ends bad.
But before you do that check your hd cables and plugs. Unplug, clean, replug. Sometimes the ribbon cables or plugs go bad. If you don’t know how to do that yourself then ask another question, or get the local store to do it. It might get complicated, even a bad power supply or a failing motherboard can cause disc errors.
If you are desperate then you might try Spinrite from Gibson. Some people swear by it. It boots from a floppy and analyses/fixes the whole drive. It can take a long long time. But even if that works, I’d not trust the drive afterwards. If its your only drive then get a new one anyway. Keep the fixed one for spare space in emergencies.
Other thoughts that might be useful:
Back up everything again, just in case. Then run error checking from "My computer". Back up a second (third?) time. Put the new drive in as master. Make a seperate partition for important data ( I got a partition for photos, another for music, another for software). Then install XP or whatever OS you use.. Defragement. Install software. Defragment again. Put the data back, on a seperate partition. If you don’t know how to make a new partition then ask the question. Then, when you don’t need the old disk any more try running Spinrite on it if you really must. If money is plentiful, then get two new drives. One for the OS and apps, one for your data and backups. I put three drives!
I bought a Samsung laptop with Windows 7.
Upon activation, Windows 7 partitioned my hard disk into drive C and drive D, telling me that drive D would be used as a backup drive in case of hard disk problems.
Samsung software then made another partition to act as a system recovery disk.
The Windows backup program later told me that having system recovery information or backups on the same hard disk is not the best way of doing things (logically), and that I should back up onto external media such as an external hard drive.
So what is the point of Windows 7 partitioning in the first place, and of Samsung software doing the same?
They do that as a ‘Software Recovery Solution’.
So if you get virus you can simply restore it in 20mins.
(Or for whatever reason.. you can recover the computer easy)
But.. It’s only a Software Fix. (Wont Fix Hardware Problems)
They say it’s not logical cause it’s not.. If the Hard Drives Fails.
(If the HD Fails you lose Everything.. so back up the ‘Backup Image’ to a DVD)
Goto Start menu.. All Programs, Recovery? Or Accessories, system tools, recovery?
Find the section that lets you burn the image to a DVD (Well 3 DVD’s)
That way you can recover your computer.. If Either hardware and software fail.

what should be the size and format of an external hard disk needed to back up a 320 gb PS3 data that has only game software files, system software/firmware files, update files for both games and system firmware and other database files like trophies, etc. (i play only games on ps3 and no other movies, music and such data is stored on ps3 hard disk)? does ps3 first compress the data and then prepare the back up? what will be the compressed size of a 320 gb ps3 data backup?
you need an external HDD the same size as the ps3 has installed , even if the ps3 uses less memory the backup utility will not allow the backup unless the external hdd has 320 gigs free space for a 320 gig ps3
since the ps3 cannot use a hard drive larger than 500 gigs the biggest ypou can upgrade to is 500 gigs , not really enough a size difference from 320 gigs to go throught he trouble of an upgrade unless you really think you would fill 320 gigs on the ps3 , it does not compress the backup to a smaller sized file , the ps3 cannot do this so if the ps3 has 150 gigs used the external will use 120 gigs for the backup
