I need a solution that allows me to backup any selected files/folders/drives from all of the following on a wired and wireless home network:
- Laptop running Windows XP Pro
- Computer running Windows XP Pro
- Computer running Windows Vista Home Premium

to a Windows XP Professional computer located on the network via ethernet.
These backups will most likely be setup differently on each computer, for example the computer running Vista will need to backup every night, but the others would be once a week.
Altermately l am looking for some kind of software solution and preferably not to expensive!

I think that the best choice for you is True Image. True Image can backup files/folders/partitions/disks and it is compatible with both XP and Vista. Also it has scheduler and it can execute both differential and incremental backups.

I can back-up everything but the pictures. What can i do ?

You can try photo recovery software.. it might help.
but, photo recovery software can be a dangerous thing if you use by mistake an unauthorized software.
I recommend Stellar Photo Recovery.

What do I need to know before I open up my computer and remove the hard drive and re-insert it afterwards? I just need to remove it to connect it to a laptop with anti-virus software to clean it, and re-insert it after its clean. Its infected with a bad virus.

Also, I do not have a USB or another external hard drive or hard disk to store backup files. I have >30GB of stuff I need on my hard drive that I can’t store copies anywhere.
And I do have the necessary equipment to run the hard drive seperate from the cpu like an external hard drive, such as a connecting cord to the USB port, power cord, and a disk with software to help me run it.
I have a IDE cord that connects the hard drive to the laptop Karl….Read carefully before you post up useless answers.

We do not have repair shops for computers. Only wanna-be’s who’ll try to wreck it and sell you another one.
I have a pretty bad virus that will not let me install anything on my computer. It will just shut down. I can’t even run command prompt or access folder options.

You need to know to use a grounding wrist strap or touch the side of the case before you touch the hard drive, Also try not to touch the circuit board of the hard drive as it only takes a small amount of static build up to destroy electronic components. And avoid using tools that have been magnetized they can also damage electronics. Also make sure you unplug the power cord from it before hand The rest of it is pretty straight forward open the case make sure your grounded by touching its side and make a note of how the cables connect then unplug them, and then un screw the hard drive mounting screws remove hard drive by grabbing it by its sides only and make sure you do not jar it or drop it as that can cause damage to it also.

I am thinking about getting two extra HDD’s (Not looking for RAID). One hard drive would be used to store incoming files that may be hazardous to my computer system. Let’s call this HD(1). One other hard drive, lets call it HD(2), would be used for daily tasks, installing software, creating/editing/deleting files, essentially my ‘main’ working hard drive.
The third hard drive HD(3) would be used ONLY as a preventive backup measure, it would host all of the files (of my choice) from HD(2) and then make a complete compressed image of HD(2) so I could choose to restore either the entire system, or only the files to a new OS – HD(3) would NOT need backing up.

My questions is, if I were to have these three HDD’s, could a virus or some other sort of infected file spread from the HD(1) – the storage HD onto my other hard disks? Or is the infectious file isolated to it’s physical hard drive? What about if I were to partition the drives? Would this make any difference to the files ability to spread?

Thanks!
Thanks guys – I thought so, although I wanted to be 100% sure. I have Avast! AntiVirus, ZoneAlarm firewall, Spybot Search & Destroy & WinPatrol. Any good?

Do you perhaps have any suggestions for hard drive isolation software? That is, software which is -designed- to keep hard drives apart from each other/isolated/protected or kept in a ‘bubble’, something like sandboxie just, for hard drives instead.

Files will still be hazardous to your computer on an external drive. After all you use your computer to view therm don’t you. How do you think viruses spread in the first place. Better to get a good anti virus, trojan worm sofware. and scanning before putting to external sources.

i know that ghost helps to back up files, documents and OS…basically a copy of the HD.so wat is the recovery disc from hp used for??
does ghost backup all the other software which is installed other than the ones pre-installed??
if the only difference is backinup documents and stuff wouldn’t it be better to use external devices..
i appreciate your help in advance

Ghost clones. Recovery, does an intact recovery. Assuming a good source clone. It is faster to swap a drive than to do a recovery

So Im doing a fresh re-install of windows vista on my PC and I was wondering how to backup my january software updates that i paid for. Did I need to at all, I mean its currently on my ipod touch right now but if I have to restore my ipod will they still be there. Because Ive done it before and it just adds the apps back on but im formatting my hard drive so how can I backup the updates. Thanks

Go to Application Data. It will probably be hidden, so if you can’t find it, do a search in your computer for it. Then go to Apple Computer and look for the iPod touch app pack ___.IPA and there’s your file to backup. Its like only 20kb.

So my RAID0 is giving me an error: "A Drive in a RAID0 Volume is failing. Try to backup immediately." I want to do a backup and a reformat cause I think it might be software that’s causing the problem. Is there any application I can download that can scan my disk to make sure it is 100% healthy?
I also need an application that can scan just 1 drive at a time in my RAID0 so I can decide if a reformatting is good enough or if I need to buy a new harddrive

For Windows 7

DVD Shrink (FREE) : http://www.dvdshrink.org/what_en.php
DVDShrink is software to backup DVD discs. You can use this software in conjunction with DVD burning software of your choice, to make a backup copy of any DVD video disc. It also burns your backup DVD, if you have installed the latest version of Nero. If you already possess alternative burning software and prefer to stick with it, then you can still use DVD Shrink. The output from DVDShrink can be saved as files on your hard drive, which you can then burn with software of your choice.
