I want to backup games to a dual layer disk but only have a HP cd-writer+ 9100 drive but I dont know if I can use a dual layer in it. Can I or do i need to download some sort of software or buy a new drive?
As far as I know there is no such thing as a dual layer CD so you must have a DVD writer before you can even think of writing to a dual layer. In other words you need to buy a DVD RW drive that does dual layer
I am trying to backup my entire hard disk using xcopy in Dos. Is xcopy command the same or works the same as using Ghost software for transfering entire disk to a new hard disk? Thanks
No, it is totally different.
i’m totally confused i didn’t use any recovery software .how can i clone (backup) my whole system using norton ghost. i have a 250GB HDD IWANT TO CLONE WHOLE 250 GB ,SUPPOSE IF I CLONE THEN HOW MUCH WOULD BE THE SIZE OF THE BACKUP FILE.if the size of the backup would be the size of the original data then what is the use of using the software i can separately write ithe data onto a dvd or any other media.why MAJORITY OF THE PEOPLE USE RECOVERY SOFTWARE(NORTON GHOST,…………)_?????.SUPPOSE IF I CREATE A BACKUP FILE OF LETS SAY 30GB EVEN THEN I HAVE TO STORE THAT BACKUP FILE ON DVD ?????? PLSSSSS ANS MY Q PLS I’M IN REAL TROUBLE
I believe that if you clone 250 GB, it will give you a 250 GB file – though I’m guessing you haven’t used up ever last megabyte on your hard drive, so it will only clone YOUR data. Norton Ghost is a bit-by-bit cloner, allowing you to take your hard drive, and make a perfect copy of it, so if your hard drive dies, all you have to do it put the ghosted copy on a new hard drive and, BOOM, you’re back up.
Though, I’m not sure if it gives you the 250 GB file, or a compressed file.
I’ve read about it enough that the option keeps coming to me while researching the best external HD to buy.
This would be cheaper — probably not drastically so, but I’d still want it to be a considered option.
I also think of it, because I know a lot of external HDs advertise auto-backup software — which is not something I need. I’m not backing up, I just have a HD of ~110gb on my laptop but have a lot of movies and other big files that aren’t updated (like word or excel files), that would be better suited on another HD (where I could watch them off it, or temporarily copy them to my laptop when I wanted to watch them).
I’m experiencing some doubt of my technological abilities**, so I wanted some advice on this process (to help choose, or not choose, to do it).
**also composed of being a full-time student, and so money I’ll be spending on w/e HD would be more to me than someone who’s got a regular income. I don’t want to try this, then find out something doesn’t work and have wasted the money.
ALSO –this may be stupid, but I know portable HDs are smaller b/c they use a laptop HD, but it’s compatible to either type of computer, right? (ie: I could use a non-portable HD that uses a "desktop" HD with my laptop or a portable one on a desktop)
Wow, thanks for all the answers so far.
regarding one of them: yea, I looked up prices on some cases and see that an external one might be cheaper than casing an internal one (I was just working of the older notion when externals used to be considerably more expensive than internals)
All external hard drives are compatible with all computers.
Putting an internal HD into an enclosure is a piece of cake; both for 3.5" and 2.5" (desktop and laptop). They usually even come with the tools you need (tiny screwdriver, etc.) BUT I’m not sure if you will necessarily save any money vs an external HD. They are maybe even cheaper now. And you don’t have to use any of the software that comes with it if you don’t wanna. You can just delete it.
But if you already have an HD and nowhere to put it then the enclosure is a good way to go. Don’t sweat it.
The original was created with Nero software and contained a 30 minute videoclip. After attempting to create backup using Sonic media software on my laptop, no images seen on both the original and backup. Only a near blank screen with two horizontal lines seen with a caption at the base stating "Created with Nero". Any advice to rectify the prblem will be very much appreciated.
Is this a repeat question? I think I’ve seen it before.
Nero shouldn’t change the original file. If you are having problems with the program try reading the manual or searching on the website.
I wouldn’t use Sonic software. Use Nero Express to make a copy of a CD.
I’m looking to backup some games and was wondering what some good software is; if there is any good software for free that would be nice.
So you could be able to backup some Xbox 360 games, certainly you need a good game copying software. The internet is of course the best place to search for one. Something like Game Backup System would be nice.
Using Acronis True Image 11, what’s the difference between creating a backup and cloning the HD? What type of back up should I create, "my computer" or "my applications"?
I’m looking for information on a couple of things, particularly ways of "cleaning off" my HD without having to reformat and reinstall windows and other applications.
1-What type of backup would easily "restore" my computer to a "clean" condition (with Windows, drivers, applications, settings), should I, say, download/install some bad software?
2-Should my harddrive die and I need to "move" to a new one? A clone?
3-I have a 2nd HD installed. What kind of backup could I save to is, so that the 2nd could be used too boot the computer should my main HD die? This second HD is partitioned. My main is not.
4-I’d like to partition my main drive. (20GB for the OS and applications. The rest for data.). Can I clone to my second drive. Partition the main drive, then move the image back to the main drive?
Cloning is a precise data transfer I’d say sector by sector data transfer. Whereas backup procedure creates a single image file, during this procedure data can be compressed (optional) however in case you want to restore not the full image but only some files this can be easily done using “browse” image option.
1.In order to restore OS after for example virus attack you need to backup OS partition (C: by default). So after that you’ll get not only your OS but also applications drivers and settings.
2&3. You can create Acronis Secure Zone (a hidden partition) on your second drive and store an image of the first drive there, therefore in case your first hdd crash you can easily restore an image. This is very convenient because in case you create a Secure Zone on the same drive it won’t protect you from physical hdd crash.
4. First option: Backup/clone your first hdd and send an image to the Secure Zone created on the second drive. Then format your first drive using your original Windows CD and then restore image from the second drive.
Second option: Use special partition management software like Disk Director by Acronis which can easily split you drive without data loss.

I have an external hard drive that I use to backup pictures, MP3 files and so on. I usually do the drag and drop method, but I’d now like to look into some reliable software that can auto-backup / synch specific folders as I use my Windows desktop PC. Might anyone have any recommendations?
I’m not interested in imaging the drive, but just backup valuable files and folders to my external hard drive.
I use SyncBack, the are a few versions, even a free one.
